DescriptionSims operated at the former Hazelhurst Mill which was built late 19th century and occupied by William Eccles who manufactured towels. In 1930s it was a slipper factory run by Davison's Slippers Ltd. William Eccles had then moved his business to Cobden Mill, Ramsbottom. In 1936 Kurt Oscar Engel (Berlin born) established his business at Hazelhurst Mill producing first class insulated wires and strips. The company became F.D. Sims Ltd the 4th largest manufacturer of insulated wires in the U.K. The site became known as Hazelhurst Works or Sims Wire Works. Mrs Engels had previously established The Temple Manufacturing Company on the top floor of Cobden Mill, Ramsbottom in 1930s. F.D. Sims was acquired by the TT Group in 1997. Site cleared 2003 and now housing.
